KUCHING, 31 March: A total of eight bridge projects in Sarawak are expected to be completed according to the schedule set for this year, despite facing current challenges, including global uncertainties that could affect the supply chain of construction materials.

Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, assured that current issues, including conflicts in the Middle East, would not affect the overall implementation of the said projects.

"We are not worried about these problems. There may be issues, but they will not reach a level that could disrupt the contracts," he said when met by the media after attending the Sarawak Infrastructure Engagement Program 2026 at the Pullman Hotel today.

He, who is also the Minister of Sarawak Infrastructure and Port Development, said the state government is confident that all the bridge projects would proceed smoothly and could be completed as planned.

“We are confident it will go well. As for the bridge, I don’t think there will be any problems. There may be minor issues, but they will not affect our schedule to complete it this year,” he further explained.

According to him, close monitoring measures are also being implemented, including discussions with relevant parties to ensure the procurement of construction materials and project planning take into account the current situation.

“We are also being cautious, which is why I went to BCCK 2 to discuss the material purchasing program and so on, because we want to ensure their planning takes into account what is happening,” he said.

The eight bridge projects expected to be completed this year are Batang Lupar Bridge One and Two, Batang Igan Bridge, Batang Krian Bridge, Limbang River Bridge, Batang Paloh Bridge, Batang Saribas Two Bridge, Sejingkat River Bridge, and Batang Rambungan Bridge.

In the same development, he informed that the Batang Lupar 1 Bridge project is currently at a good implementation stage and is proceeding according to plan.

Uggah also revealed that all 20 bridge projects in Sarawak are fully funded by the Sarawak Government at a cost of nearly RM8 billion.

"For 20 bridges, 100 percent is funded by Sarawak, almost RM8 billion," he said.

He added that the state government will continue to monitor current developments and adjust the implementation approach to ensure that all projects can continue without disruption and achieve the set completion targets.

"We are observing the situation and the government is also learning how to handle this situation and seeking the best way to implement it," he said.

Meanwhile, the project implementation team will continue to ensure that all work proceeds smoothly so that the completion targets can be achieved according to the set schedule. – TVS
