PUSA, 18 Mar: The Sarawak Coastal Road Project under Package A5, covering the stretch from Batang Saribas 2 Bridge to Roban Junction, now shows a physical progress of 61.81 percent.

Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, said the approximately 29.5-kilometer-long project is expected to be fully completed in the first quarter of 2027, thereby enhancing connectivity networks and boosting economic development in the Betong Division.

"The Sarawak government is committed to ensuring this project is implemented according to the set schedule. Current progress shows positive developments despite facing various technical challenges in the field," he said when met at the Early Pre-Launch Ceremony of the Sungai Krian Bridge on Wednesday.

He, who is also the Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development of Sarawak, explained that the scope of work for this package includes the construction of a new road starting after the Batang Saribas Bridge in Kuala Saribas up to Roban Junction, which connects to the Pan Borneo Highway. “Among the main components of the project are site clearing works, provision of temporary road diversions, earth and rock excavation work, as well as the construction of concrete retaining structures and slope stabilization works.

“Also carried out is the construction of a comprehensive drainage system such as culverts, roadside drains, cross drains, and other drainage structures to ensure efficient water flow and reduce the risk of flooding,” he explained.

Uggah added that this project also involves the construction of a major intersection, a bridge across a drainage, road surfacing using asphalt complete with road shoulders and street furniture. In addition, he said that aspects of environmental management are given attention through the implementation of an Environmental Management Plan (EMP), monitoring, as well as erosion and sediment control throughout the construction period.

“The preparation of a Traffic Management Plan is also given attention, including the provision of a traffic management team and temporary road facilities to ensure road user safety is always guaranteed. “The government hopes this project will provide great benefits to the people, particularly in enhancing accessibility, reducing travel time, and stimulating socio-economic growth in the coastal areas of Sarawak,” he said.

Uggah also emphasized that the opening of the Sungai Krian Bridge, valued at RM112,499,580.09, marks a historic moment for the coastal residents of the Betong Division who previously relied on ferry services. “The use of the bridge not only facilitates daily movement but is also expected to have a positive impact on the socio-economic development of the area,” he added. -TVS
