MIRI (Nov 14): The works under the Kuala Baram Delta access channel dredging and deepening project are progressing robustly, now reaching progress rate of 40 per cent and ahead of schedule.

According to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, the RM208.9 million development is designed to enhance navigational access and lay the groundwork for the future expansion of Miri Port.

Key components include deepening the access channel, constructing two 6km training bunds, and upgrading navigational aids.

During a site visit today, Uggah – also the state Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development – expressed his satisfaction with the project’s pace and quality.

He then called upon the contractor to maintain momentum by capitalising on the favourable conditions.

“I hope the company would mobilise all their machinery and materials to complete this critical project on time.”

While the original completion date was set for March 2027, the state government has requested the Miri Port Authority and the contractor to accelerate the timeline, with a new target of October next year.

“Miri has been waiting for this project for so long. Now we hope to deliver it on schedule,” he said.

An additional benefit of the project is the creation of naturally-reclaimed land along sections of the riverbank, which should serve as valuable assets for the port’s long-term development.

The site visit was also conducted by state Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin; Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Dato Majang Renggi; Miri Port Authority chairman Dato Paulus Palu Gumbang and its general manager Serawa Budol; and Sarawak ports advisor Datuk Ian James.
