CHENGDU, Oct 28: Sarawak's Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) continues to strengthen its expertise in the field of infrastructure development through an official working visit to Chengdu in Sichuan Province, China on Monday.

The delegation was led by the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas who is also the MIPD Minister.

The visit aims to expand technical knowledge and understanding regarding the implementation of infrastructure projects in challenging geographical areas in line with the state government's efforts to improve regional communication networks under the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

Uggah emphasized that infrastructure development will continue to be guided by the principles outlined in PCDS 2030 including social inclusion, environmental sustainability and economic prosperity.
"In expanding the network of connections to the interior, our approach must remain ethical and responsible so that progress always goes hand in hand with the preservation of the environment and the well-being of the people," he said in a statement on Monday.

He further explained that the visit has given MIPD useful exposure in the approach and best practices for the construction of roads, bridges and tunnels in challenging areas such as highlands and peatlands in Bario, Baram, Lawas and Sebuyau districts.

Meanwhile, the Sarawak delegation also had the opportunity to inspect major infrastructure projects such as the Ya'an Kanding and Ya'an-Xichang highways that have utilized environmentally friendly engineering techniques.

The step involving the construction of tunnels and elevated roads is described as one of the ways to preserve the beauty of nature, improve safety and reduce the impact on the local ecosystem.

In addition to the technical visit, an engagement session with the local authorities of Sichuan Province is also scheduled to gain knowledge on best practices in aspects of planning, monitoring, and implementation of infrastructure development policies.

The official visit thus proves the Sarawak Government's continued commitment in strengthening technical capabilities and applying sustainable and international infrastructure development practices towards a more connected, inclusive and prosperous Sarawak.

The arrival of the Sarawak delegation was warmly welcomed by the Chairman of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), Chen Ning, in addition to sharing their extensive expertise and experience in infrastructure development around the world.

Also participating in the visit were Deputy Minister of MIPD, Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo and Datuk Majang Renggi together with his Permanent Secretary, Datu Chiew Chee Yaw. – TVS
