KUCHING: The Ministry of Works started the Pan Borneo Highway Exploration tour today to witness firsthand the latest development of the project.

Its minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said his ministry and Public Works Department (JKR) will monitor the entire route from Kuching to Miri and will stop at several places, including Betong and Sibu.

“This is to see the condition of Pan Borneo Highway which is almost completed.

“This is also one of the preparatory efforts to ensure this route is in good condition, because as has been told, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah will visit and explore the Pan Borneo Highway that starts from Sabah to Telok Melano in Kuching,” he said.

Nanta, who is the Kapit MP, was speaking to the media before the flag off at Farley Kuching here, today.

Throughout the two-day trip, he said the ministry will ensure the condition of the road is ready and ensure road safety is prioritised.

Meanwhile, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the exploration is also to convey to the public the latest progress of the Pan Borneo Highway.

Uggah, who is also the Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD), said the Pan Borneo Highway is a game changer for Sarawakians, which helps to reduce traveling time.

“For example, I’m from Betong. Previously, it takes about 4 1/2 hours to reach Betong from Kuching. With normal driving speed, now I can reach around 3 hours or if I’m more adventurous, I may reach Betong around 2 1/2 hours,” he said.

Also present were MIPD deputy ministers Dato Majang Renggi and Ir. Aidel Lariwoo, and JKR Sarawak director Richard Tajan.
