SARIKEI: The newly completed third Batang Rajang Bridge is officially named the Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang Tuanku Haji Othman Bridge, in honor of the former Sarawak State President who contributed a lot to the development of the state.

The announcement was made by the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during his inauguration ceremony, today.

Uggah described the nomination as a fitting tribute to a great figure who played an important role in the administration and political development of Sarawak.

"Tuanku Bujang was born in Sibu in 1898 and served as the second Yang di-Pertua Negeri from 1969 to 1977. He started his career in the Sarawak Public Service in 1934, and showed great leadership and dedication," he explained.

After retiring from public service, he was active in politics and was one of the founders of Barisan Ra'ayat Jati Sarawak (BERJASA).

Tuanku Bujang also played an important role in the merger of BERJASA and Parti Negara Sarawak (PANAS), which led to the establishment of the Bumiputera Party in 1968.
